GPU recommendation

Post by SAW on Tue Nov 18, 2014 11:45 pm

Please recommend a graphics card!

Mine is 5-6 years old (ATI 5770) and I'd like to go with Nvidia.

I'm eyeballing this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130944&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC-_-pla-_-Desktop+Graphics+Cards-_-N82E16814130944&gclid=CICFgtWdhcICFY9j7AodexAAew

or maybe this one (refurbished) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125687

Post if you come across a good deal.  I'll upgrade my mobo if needed.

I got the EVGA GTX 770 (4g version) a little over a year ago, and I like it a lot.

I was wanting to upgrade and a guy I know from JG51 had just bought the 760.  I was looking at a buying a 760 myself, but ended up getting the 770 instead.

Sorry I don't have a link for you, and I can't quote anything specific, but I checked out performance graphs before I bought it, and it was a pretty good jump up from the 760 for about $50 more.  They are both significantly reduced now from last year when I bought mine.

Anyway, the 760 should run anything out there right now at max.  My friend with the 760 flies CLOD at max with no problem. The only issue I know of is in heavy flak/smoke etc. but that has been an IL2 issue forever AFAIK. Next gen might be a different story, but not many PC developers are going that way yet.  Some are, but they are mostly kickstarter/crowdfunded like Star Citizen.

As of now, my 770 runs Star Citizen (Arena Commander Alpha) on max, and it's not optimized yet, so I feel confident that it will run it on release with no hiccups.

Good stuff Sailor!  Thanks!

Luckily, I won't need to replace my motherboard.  I've learned PCI Express 3.0 is no faster than the PCI Express 2.0 my board has now.  in some cases the PCI Express 3.0 is actually slower in benchmarks Laughing

My PSU is a Corsair 750W and will handle a solid card easily

And....my AMD Phenom II X4 945 CPU is still near the top (or close enough) of the hierarchy chart so I'm gonna keep it too.

Any input on 2GB vs 4GB ??

I've read 4GB is really not needed if running 1080P.....
